Sleeping Beauty Turquoise was named because Sleeping Beauty Mountain looks like a woman sleeping on her back with her arms folded. Sleeping Beauty Mountain was originally mined for copper and gold. This very popular and once highly-producing mine in Globe, Arizona (Gila County) ceased turquoise mining operations in August of 2012, and has reverted back to copper mining. This stone’s popularity has recently broadened even further; and the price of natural Sleeping Beauty Turquoise has risen dramatically since the mine’s closing, due to complete lack of production and limited availability. Sleeping Beauty Turquoise has long been favored by many Native American jewelry artists for it’s uniform and beautiful sky blue color; but stashes of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise are increasingly very difficult for the jewelry artists to find and work with.
