Here you will find our entire online selection of Jewelry with Turquoise specifically from the Kingman Mine in Arizona.
Kingman Turquoise is usually a beautiful vibrant blue, but can also be green turquoise, blue/green in color, and can have lots of very interesting variations of color and matrix. Kingman Turquoise is a very interesting stone that can be used in almost any type of jewelry.
Kingman Turquoise Mine
The Kingman Turquoise Mine in northwestern Arizona (approximately 15 miles NorthWest of Kingman, AZ) is one of the largest and highest producing turquoise mines in North America. Kingman Turquoise became known for the beautiful blue color usually displayed in this stone. The mine became famous for its rounded, bright blue nuggets with black matrix. Few turquoise mines produce nuggets, especially of this quality. The majority of Kingman Turquoise is stabilized to make it suitable for jewelry; and in this form, it is quite affordable. The remainder of the Kingman Turquoise stays in its natural state. In its high-grade form Kingman Turquoise has always been considered among the highest quality of turquoise. The best Kingman stones being produced today are deep blue with black matrix with some being spider web.
Stone hammers (brought in by Native American Hohokam workers) uncovered in ancient trenches by Chuck Colbough in 1962 prove that Kingman turquoise was first mined by Native Americans as early as 600 a.d. Then, there is evidence that the the Mayan culture was using Kingman Turquoise in ceremonies, and for adornment (even jewelry) around 1000 AD.
The Kingman Turquoise Mine, also known as the Mineral Park Mine (other minerals are mined here, primarily copper) has been worked commercially since the 1880’s. The Colbaugh family has owned and operated mining and processing facilities at Kingman since very early on. Although turquoise mining operations were closed in the 1970’s, they re-opened in 2004 and Kingman is one of the highest producing mines in the Unite States. Chuck Colbaugh’s grandson, Marty, now runs operations at the Kingman Turquoise Mine, and is now partly responsible for a lot of VERY beautiful jewelry!!
